The Solomon Islands is a country in Melanesia, east of Papua New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. Together they cover a land mass of 28,400 square kilometres (10,965 sq mi). The capital is Honiara, located on the island of Guadalcanal.
The Solomon Islands are believed to have been inhabited by Melanesian people for thousands of years. The United Kingdom established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of ...the most bitter fighting of World War II occurred in the Solomon Islands campaign of 1942–45, including the Battle of Guadalcanal. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. The Solomon Islands is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state.
The North Solomon Islands are divided between the independent Solomon Islands and Bougainville Province in Papua New Guinea.
Honiara, population 49,107 (1999), 54,600 (2003 est.), is the capital of the Solomon Islands and of Guadalcanal Province, although it is a separately administered town. The name "Honiara" is actually a misnomer: the English colonialists found it hard to pronounce the original name of the area in the northern Guadalcanal languages: Nagoniara. Nagoniara means "in front of the wind."
Auki is the provincial capital of Malaita Province, Solomon Islands. It is situated on the northern end of Langalanga Lagoon on the north-west coast of Malaita Island. There are daily flights between the Solomons capital of Honiara (on Guadalcanal Island) and Auki. There are also regular shipping services between Honiara and Auki. The town has electricity and the road is paved to the airport (approx. 11km). The town has fruit, vegetables and fresh fish sold daily in the market at the main wharf.
Tigoa (Sometimes spelt Tingoa) is a village in the Solomon Islands, on Rennell Island. It is the capital of Rennell and Bellona province. It is located approximately 40-60ft above sea level and it is where Rich is right now.
Munda is the largest settlement on the island of New Georgia in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, and consists of a number of villages. It is located at the southwestern tip (called Munda Point) of the western end of New Georgia, and the large Roviana Lagoon is just offshore.
